What is domain name? Domain name is given address for your website so, by giving it to your website visitors such us partners, customers or friends they can find your website easily in internet.
Domain names have top level and second level. Top level is your name address as www.site.com
Second level is called subdomain. What for would you use subdomain? Sometimes it can be really useful, that is why when you buy hosting and domain from some hosting company be sure that they provide subdomain free of charge. Example of a website with subdomains:
forum.site.com, blog.site.com, shop.site.com and so on
As you can understand subdomains can be really useful, you pay once for domain but you can have some websites on it so then domain name becomes cheap and affordable.
As maybe you have already mentioned on the picture and in internet domain names can have different endings like .com, .org, .net, .us, .co.uk, .biz. All of them carry different meanings. The most popular domain is .com, it means commercial. Its up to you to choose any you like, for example you can buy the cheapest like .info or .name. The only domain ending you can not buy are .edu. .edu can be used only buy universities or other education organizations. If you have some organization that doesnt earn money and it aim is to help people in some questions i advise to buy domain with .org.

You can check availability of domain name at the hosting company that you work with or, if you have not choose a hosting company yet you can check it from who.is . Who.is website provides information on domains that are available for buying and information on domains that already has been bought.

Usually you can easily register your domain in a a hosting company or online at services like godaddy.com ( its name is registrar) . After domain registration you own it during the time that you payed for. After you buy domain check it in who.is, if the information on domain name belongs to you.

1. Its good if your domain name will contain the theme of your website. For example, you sell cheap templates for websites and your company name is Paul and Co. So what is the best domain in this case? The best will be a domain like paultemplates.com
2. Do not use names in your domain name. Example, you give name to domain like this: paulsmith.com. Sure its nice to show that this domain name and website belongs to you, but then it will be more difficult to optimize it for search engines…
3. Your domain name should be easy for remember. Dont make it long, with numbers and so on. Sure most common and beautiful domain names are already taken during age of internet but be sure, just have a try you will find the best. If you want, we can help you with it.

How to take care of your domain? Just mind, that before your domain name expires you have to prolong it buy paying for the next year. You can register domain for even 10 years, but if your domain registration is only for 1 year, do forget to pay next year, good domains can be cought and registered by another person, and then you will lose it forever. Free domain can be only second level. That means a kind of a subdomain. Free domain registration you can to at websites that provide free hosting services, but then your domain name will look like paultemplates.site.com.
